What you thought of when you designed it?

Originally, back in the late 90’s, the Soul was a single fin, as the retro designs were making a comeback. In recent years, people have asked for a board similar to the Hayden Shapes and Hypto Krypto. When I compared the original Soul to Hayden’s model, they were virtually identical. So we added the extra fins, beefed it up slightly, and just kept it in the range under the same name.

What it possibly compromises on then?

Not a high-performance board, so if the focus is airs, tight pocket snaps, and critical top-to-bottom surfing, look at something else.

Shape Details and Design Info

OUTLINE: Full nose, wide point forward, clean outline, rounded pin. The fuller nose helps the board climb onto the water more easily with the first few strokes. Having the wide point forward creates a longer tail and a shorter nose. Because the arc of the outline is longer and straighter through the back end, it's possible to throw the board into larger surf and draw clean, solid lines. You essentially have the tail of a longer board. While you gain something in a larger open wave, it’s also the reason it won't like to jam tight in the pocket and go vert with ease.

RAILS: Fuller. The rails are relative, as the board does carry some volume. The overall rail shape, nose to tail, is fairly generic, the goal being a board that has a wide operating range

ROCKER: Medium, slightly flatter. With this rocker, the board carries into waves really well, keeps its speed over dead sections, and catches waves easily. Additionally, it carries well in cutbacks and on softer sections.

BOTTOM: Single concave. The wider nose and longer tail outline arc slightly reduce reaction time as you lean forward and on the rail to initiate a turn. The single concave helps the rail engage a little earlier while also squirting water off the opposite rail, helping it get on the rail earlier.

DECK: The deck is a fairly standard profile, with the overall board being a little thicker; this carries volume out to the rails in proportion, as well as into the nose and tail. This volume, in general, offers a level of comfort when paddling and catching waves; the first few strokes are not spent climbing out of the water.

FIN SETUP: 5 Fins. For top-to-bottom surfing, the thruster will be the better option. As the waves get a little steeper and faster, switch out to the quad to hold a higher, more direct line, or if the waves are flatter and more open with little chance of top-to-bottom surfing, the quad is also an option.

FINAL STATEMENT: A fun board that everyone can ride and catch waves on. If you can only own one board, then this is the board to have. The Soul is a quiver in one board and offers more range and versatility than any other.

Construction - Paraflex

Paraflex is SUNOVA’s premium performance construction. Developed over the last 5 years, from the ever persistent pursuit of perfect performance, It is our elite construction for all surfboards under 8’. 

Paraflex is designed to have more spring and return in shorter boards than its Balsaflex predecessor, giving you a positive “more flexible” flex pattern as the board is loaded and unloaded through sections. Flexing and bending right into the pocket and rebounding predictably these boards fly out of sections with so much speed and life. A lightweight EPS core is coupled with a ½” parabolic balsa/composite rail that is then sandwiched between balsa skins top and bottom offering a product with unmatched spring and return.

The bottom is a 1.5mm Paulownia/fiberglass sandwich that is not completely rigid. This softer area on the bottom cushions the ride of the board, making it amazingly unaffected by chatter, giving you a smooth ride even when conditions are bumpy and average. The deck is a 2mm Paulownia/fiberglass sandwich with highlighted mini I beams that connect the glass under the wood, with the glass over. This creates a very rigid strong sandwich structure that is incredibly resistant to compressions, creating a strong and responsive feeling underfoot.

Finished off with solid balsa/composite nose and tail blocks for additional resistance to dings, these boards look even better than they perform. Fitted with a self-regulating air vent that utilizes a slightly permeable Goretex membrane encased in a special aluminum vent designed and engineered by TBF, Paraflex boards are functional and forward-thinking.
