You had 2 distinct schools of longboarder, crew born before the late 1950s who had the chance to grow up longboarding and just had a natural logger style, even if they hadn’t stepped on one for 30 years or more. Then there were crew born in the 60’s, most of whom grew up on shortboards. In an effort to woo more people along to the longboard contests an 8 ft division was created, with the judging criteria based on performance shortboard surfing. This was how the 8 ball came into existence, as a competition 8ft board.

WHAT IT POSSIBLY COMPROMISES ON THEN?
One of the few boards with no compromises, it handles a variety of conditions and comes as close as you get to a true all rounder. If anything then possibly the amount of rocker, it’s more suited to a surfer who keeps his board moving, someone who climbs up like they’re on a horse and says “giddy up boy” may find it doesn’t carry as well as a flatter rocker.

SHAPE DETAILS SUMMARY | DESIGN INFO

OUTLINE
Narrower pulled in longboard nose, widest point pulled back into a hip flyer, rounded pin. The benefit of pulling the widest point back is you get a long nose and a short tail, so the tail resembles a shorter board. When you stand on the tail to turn, it really does feel like you’re on a shorter board. Combined with the hip/flyer it does incredibly tight back foot snaps, gets vertical easily, and hooks under the lip.

RAILS
Standard profile. A lot of boards at this length assume the rider needs extra float and generally come with thicker rails which are harder to bury and have less sensitivity. With this amount of rocker the board fits nicely into tighter parts of the wave, it prefers being pumped for speed, instead of someone waiting for it to build its own momentum. It also likes a tight cutback at speed along with throw type maneuvers, where you may be going slow, but you can still throw the board up to the lip.

BOTTOM
Flat bottom. The idea is to keep the board going fast, it already has plenty of features to keep the board loose and sensitive, no need for added contours as the overall design is not dependent on bottom contours for control. Over the last 10 years board lengths have come down, so we wanted a board that reflected the latest fashion in board design but also didn’t compromise on performance. The board is low volume for its area, but also carries the volume it does have to the rails, so for its width it still sticks to the face well on late drops because of the softer rounder bottom edge up front and the tuck in the tail.

WHAT IT POSSIBLY COMPROMISES ON THEN?
LOL, no compromises, great performance small wave board. If anything the volume is set up to be the bare minimum, this was a tactic so people who choose boards based on volume alone, could not possibly choose a board that was too small. The recommended rider weights are calculated on surface area and the ability to plane in low speed waves along with pumping, so if you choose the right board for your size, then the volume would be about what your average pro is riding compared to their body weight.

SHAPE DETAILS SUMMARY |DESIGN INFO

OUTLINE
Clean arc squash tail. A look at the overall plan shape and you see an outline that has a relatively tight arc nose to tail, so from either the first pump or the first bottom turn the board has great sensitivity and initiates turns instantly. It has a very free easy pump action and goes top to bottom effortlessly. The squash, having a slightly straighter outline from the fins back will want to crack into a drift slightly earlier than the Nitro for example, so the board offers great top to bottom performance with tight clean lines, finishing off tight reos with a subtle waft to complete the move.

RAILS
Low volume but boxy. A lower volume rail offers good sensitivity as you initiate a turn, but blady rails often mean being forced to run a tight radius tuck in the bottom edge. The Clone has quite a full round bottom rail with the apex running closer to the deck. In the tail bottom edge is quite tucked, this combo offers nice hold on the face into a late sucky drop or high speed attack. The tucked edge in the tail has great control while drifting sideways and backwards, being less prone to catching a rail and the board flipping underneath you.

ROCKER
Full performance tail rocker, with a slightly flatter nose entry. The width being just under 22” straightens the outline slightly, combine this with the narrower tail and you get a board that can be pushed really hard into fast bottom turns and hold its line really well. The narrower nose helps deal with the extra wind normally encountered in larger surf. Too much nose area is notorious for catching the wind and getting hung up on the take off. The board is also super responsive rail to rail due to the narrower plan shape and tail.

RAILS
Standard profile with a pronounced tucked edge in the tail. We’ve mentioned before that thin rails penetrate better at higher speeds, in the case of the Long Gun, the rails are not super thin through the middle and forward, It’s the narrowness of the board that makes it easy to get on rail. The rails are slightly thicker than some other models, this is mainly due to flex issues. At high speeds there are higher G forces, so your board needs to be stiffer so it doesn’t over flex and wash off speed. The board in general is also slightly thicker, both these factors help to stiffen up the overall board and deal with the extra power and speed. The tucked edge through the tail helps the board hug the face better at speed and also feel more comfortable on late drops with added hold.

ROCKER
High performance banana style rocker. The Moonfish outline is deceptive, at first glance it has that fuller more parallel look, but in reality, we have taken a high performance shortboard outline and chopped 6 inches off the nose and tail, then blended the nose back in and left the tail as a wide moon. So when you pump down the line and lean it on rail the arc of the turn feels performance, the wide moon offers loads of drive and acceleration, all that area just powers off nothing when you’re on the back foot.

RAILS
Slightly fuller, tucked edge into tail. The tail rail has a slight tuck, this gives you a little more warning before it pops into a drift. One problem with really wide tails and boards is that it’s harder to get them on rail. The issue with a wide tail is the slippery feeling on the rail to rail transition. This is where you can go into an uncontrollable drift when turning under the lip at speed. One rail is engaged, then there is a brief moment where the board is flat before you can get the other rail in. With the concave you have one rail engaged, then as you transition onto the other rail, it bights and grabs with a more positive feeling.

DECK
The deck is a fairly standard profile, the tail does fine right out and gets nice and thin. While Christian himself knows what he likes, it took another shaper to break it down into simple explainable concepts so everyone could understand it. Six years later and even though it’s a few inches bigger than the original, I still ride it as my all round shortboard, so that should tell you what I personally think of this board.

WHAT IT POSSIBLY COMPROMISES ON THEN?
It tends to find its own speed, if the wave is soft and you pump aggressively, it takes 2 or 3 pumps to get going, preferring waves with a drop on the take off.

SHAPE DETAILS SUMMARY | DESIGN INFO

OUTLINE
Wider fuller nose, clean straighter more parallel through the middle into a full area round tail. The wider nose adds to paddle power as it climbs on top of the water with ease, the straighter center holds great down the line speed, then the tail has loads of area to drive off, plus offers nice squirt into the take off, the full area round tail will still do a nice tight hook off the back foot as you use that curve in the last 6 inches when hard on rail.

RAILS
Step rails, more meat on the shoulder, really fine at the edges. The front rail is typically soft and tucked under, mid to tail rail has more tuck than usual blending into a hard edge in the tail. The rails are like trainer wheels, it’s so hard to make mistakes on this board. The thin rails drop in so responsively and engage into the turn, deep enough to give hold, but then you can’t overcook a turn coz the thicker shoulder won’t over bury. The generous tuck in the bottom edge really helps the board stick when landing airs, as Christian says “Hard bottom edges are like a skimming stone”

ROCKER
Typically a lot flatter than a board of comparative performance, maybe ¼” to ⅜” less in the tail, at least 1” less in the nose. The flatter rocker carries really well, paddles great and holds its speed amazingly without needing to pump to keep it going. What I personally like best about the rocker is the extra time you get to get to your feet. All my life I have ridden extremely rockered boards, but as I’ve aged, I find unless my feet land in the exact spot, so I can get a quick pump in, I will lose the wave if it’s a fast runner. But on the Loose Juice, even if my feet are wrong, the board still carries, giving me time to adjust into the right spot.

BOTTOM
Concave, Concave and more Concave. Concave nose, chest area and really deep under the front foot, blending into a flat deck back foot area. If you like your beer and typically eject your lunch when laying on your board, this is so comfortable, you just fit right in. As you jump to your feet, your front foot finds the right spot, but most importantly, as you lean into a turn, you get so much more leverage. The rails will be engaged so much deeper if compared with a standard board for the same amount of effort and angle of your body. Another interesting feature is the volume through the tail, you will quite often hear shapers saying they put more volume under the chest for ease of paddling and wave catching, (cough, cough). Let’s look at that logically, if you make the front float, the tail sinks? Isn’t that how kooks paddle? As you catch a wave, the wave picks up the tail of the board, so you feel that tail volume launch you into takeoffs nicely.

FINS (not included)
5 Fins, Originally designed as a quad by Christian. Coupled with a shortboard that would normally feel the opposite, the combination of a smaller board with a larger fin works really well. Recently I watched the board being surfed as a twin fin, with large raked side fins and was surprised at how well it went. The goal with this board is to over fin it to offset the skatyness and drifty feeling a wide tail normally gives.

FINAL STATEMENT

A fun board for down the line waves, you will be surprised at how much ground on the face you can cover.

Fin(s) included: None.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0830/6117/8685/files/Sunova-Torpedo-Morphlex_523fc01f-0e50-468a-9f0f-707296a6da53.webp?v=1779240500
fcs-ii-pivot-performance-glass-single-fin
FCS II Pivot Performance Glass Single Fin

Upright fin with minimal sweep and base.
